Information for PhD students and candidates

FMP Graduate School

FMP takes very seriously the task of educating our PhDs and nurturing the first stages of their careers. The FMP offers a lively and stimulating environment for students including many events with our Campus neighbor, the MDC. The Phd students participate in the program of the FMP Graduate School, which consists of Scientific Training, Thesis Committee meetings and Career Training. Additionally the FMP has concluded cooperaton agreements with the Humboldt Graduate School (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin) and the Dahlem Research School (Freie Universität Berlin) to extend the range of courses.

General information

Every new PhD student needs to register for the FMP Graduate School. Please register here.

We recommend that the students enroll in the university as soon as possible. After enrolling, the university will provide you with a semester ticket, which serves as a ticket for public transportation. Information about the enrollment process are provided here: HU Chemistry, HU Biology, FU Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy.

The members of the thesis committee and the working title of the dissertation must be chosen no later than 6 months after the start of the PhD. Each PhD student receives a booklet and a document, on which participation in the graduate school is confirmed (Laufzettel).

Requirements for PhD students

Thesis Committee Meetings

Every PhD student has a Thesis Committee with at least two committee members. This committee consists of the primary research advisor and up to two other committee members. It would be desirable if the other members are later reviewers of the doctoral thesis. It is not necessary that all committee members are from the FMP.

Each PhD student is required to organize an annual meeting with the committee members to present her/his results in a 15 minute report. The coordinator of the graduate school will remind the PhD student about this meeting 3 months prior to the completion of the year. The Thesis Committee and the doctoral student discuss the current project. A summary of the meeting is prepared and signed by all members of the committee and the PhD student (see documentation form). A copy of this form is given to the coordinator of the graduate school Mrs. Katrin Wittig.

Scientific Training

Each PhD student is required to participate in seminars at the FMP. These seminars include:

  • Marthe Vogt seminars
  • Work-in-progress talks
  • Seminars of the sections (Bereichsseminare)
  • Group meetings

In addition each PhD student should present his/her research once in front of a larger audience at the FMP or at a conference. Financial support for participation in a conference is given by the graduate school (see benefits). The student collects confirmation of participation plus an abstract of the talk or a copy of the poster in his booklet.

The participation of the PhD student in FMP seminars or conferences is confirmed upon completion of his PhD by his/her thesis advisor.

The participation in the FMP Winter School (every 2nd year) and at least one FMP/MDC retreat is mandatory.

Other Activities

The FMP Graduate School strongly depends on participation and additional commitment from its members. The PhD students are encouraged to contribute as PhD representatives or at FMP-related events (e.g. Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften, Girls’ Day, Organization of the FMP Winter School or FMP/MDC retreat etc.).

Benefits

Every PhD student should attend at least one conference during the doctoral time. To support the attendance, the FMP Graduate School provides a travel grant of up to 700 €. The presentation of a poster or oral presentation is mandatory to receive this grant. Applications for travel grants can be submitted to Katrin Wittig (wittig@fmp-berlin.de) and should include the name of the conference as well as an abstract of the poster or oral presentation.
