Molecular and Theoretical Neuroscience (Alexander Walter)

Welcome to our group

Our research focusses on the molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission. Information processing in the brain relies on the communication between neurons across chemical synapses. Neurotransmitters are released presynaptically and detected postsynaptically, allowing  signals to bridge across neurons. Synaptic transmission is remarkably well organized and optimized for faithful and fast information transfer. A large number of proteins dedicated to this process have been identified, but their precise mode of action is still not well understood. Using experimental and theoretical approaches our group aims to identify principles of synaptic transmission as well as mechanisms by which synapses adapt their input/output relationship to modulate information processing.
